Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Are you interested in obtaining skills to help manage/ work or own your own farm, becoming an extension agent, veterinarian or working in agriculture education? This A.S of Science: Agriculture degree offers classes for both pathways. The animal and plant science and forestry courses provide basic skills needed to maintain livestock, land and also teach tree identification. Other classes in the program, such as agribusiness and welding can provide skills needed to handle farm finances and farm maintenance or provide an avenue of additional income.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

This curriculum is designed to serve various types of students. This curriculum is customizable for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a baccalaureate degree in veterinary sciences, or agricultural education.  It can also be customized for students who plan to work on, own or manage an agricultural facility, or develop their own agribusiness. Classes will include hands on laboratories and field trips to local agricultural businesses.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Virginia Western Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Suggested science sequences for students who plan to transfer to a 4-year institution are either Bio 101-102 or Chem 111-112.
Doing More With Your Degree For those interested in either obtaining a four-year degree in veterinary sciences, agriculture education or becoming an extension agent, this AS program provides the perfect foundation. Almost all classes transfer to Virginia Tech, and Ferrum, meaning students would not be losing any credits when transferring after obtaining an AS degree. Students who intend to transfer should verify specific program requirements with their four-year institution.
