Statewide & Specialized Resources

EMPLOYMENT RESOURCES

Finding meaningful employment is a critical step in the reentry process. In Virginia, several state-run programs and specialized job boards are designed specifically to connect justice-impacted individuals with fair-chance employers.

Specialized Job Boards and Search Engines

  • Honest Jobs: The nation's largest fair-chance employment platform, specifically designed to help people with criminal records find work quickly by matching their background with compatible employers.

  • CareerOneStop (Justice-Impacted): Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, this site offers a step-by-step guide to career planning and a localized job search tool for those with a criminal record.

  • Virginia Workforce Connection: The primary state employment service used by reentering citizens. Employers often use this portal specifically to recruit returning citizens.

Virginia-Specific Support and Training

  • Virginia Bonding Program: This program provides free $5,000 fidelity bonds to employers for the first six months of a returning citizen's employment. These bonds protect employers against potential loss and serve as a powerful incentive during the hiring process.

  • Virginia CARES: A statewide network that helps newly released individuals transition back into the community by providing job interview guidance, employment leads, and essential stabilization services like food and transportation.

  • PAPIS (Virginia Prisoner Reentry Program): Administered by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, this grant-funded program emphasizes job readiness and employment placement services for adults released from state prisons and local jails.
