The Medical Administrative Office Specialist (MAOS) certificate program prepares individuals to work as front office staff in medical office settings. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Center Competency Test (NCCT) for certification

Outcomes

Students will be able to: Demonstrate effective communication skills during the interview process and in all other interactions with patients and professionals. Demonstrate the ability to perform front office functions such as scheduling, communicating (with healthcare professionals, patients and third party payers). Handle medical records appropriately, to include the electronic medical record, HIPAA, and financial management, while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. Apply medical terminology appropriately in the work place. Apply legal and ethical standards within the medical office setting.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

The Medical Administrative Office Specialist (MAOS) certificate program prepares individuals to work as front office staff in medical office settings. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) for certification.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Eastern Shore Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses 1. Students must complete the program within 3 years to be eligible for national certification. 2. There is a limited time for the student to test for national certification following graduation. 3. Students must apply and send all information to National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) in order to sit for examination. 4. NCCT information regarding testing and fees can be found at https://www.ncctinc.com/ 5. Part-time students should consult their faculty advisors regarding appropriate course sequences.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students must earn 25% of their credits at ESCC for an Associate degree from our institution. Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Associate degree will be awarded SDV 100 and will have their transcript evaluated for other course transfer. Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Bachelor degree from a U.S. college or university will be awarded SDV 100, ENG 111 and ENG 112. The transcript will be evaluated for other course transfer.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School ESCC does not distinguish between students earning an associate degree concurrently, while in high school, or after high school graduation.
