Associate of Science in Social Sciences - Pre-Social Work Specialization

J Sargeant Reynolds Community College

The Pre-Social Work specialization is designed for students who plan to transfer to Virginia Commonwealth University and major in social work. This specialization was developed in collaboration with VCU, and an articulation agreement exists for eligible students who transfer to VCU. Students who pursue a different degree program at VCU will be subject to a reevaluation of transferable credits for their elected course of study. Students interested in this specialization should meet with the Pre-Social Work program head at Reynolds and are required to do so during their first semester of study.

Considerations for Selecting Degree	Students take basic, transfer general education credits that have been tailored to transfer smoothly and directly into VCU's Bachelor of Social Work degree program.
Considerations When Selecting Courses	Students should follow the "roadmap" as presented in the college catalog. An Advising Checklist is available from the Program Head which can be helpful. Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year Connect with an advisor at your community college and J Sargeant Reynolds Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses	BIO.101 and BIO.102 are the required science courses; no other science courses will substitute. Students must take Pre-Social Work-designated sections of HMS.100 and HMS.121 for those classes to be accepted by VCU. ENG.210 is typically NOT offered in the summer.
Doing More With Your Degree	The requirement for Precalculus with Trigonometry may be met by MTH 161/162 or MTH 167.
Program Successes & Highlights	Social Work is a high-demand field and our Articulation Agreement with VCU allows Reynolds' students who successfully complete this degree to transfer to VCU as juniors into their BSW
