Associate of Applied Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

The Emergency Medical Services degree is designed to produce high-quality, entry-level paramedics who can serve the community with advanced life support care via the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (NEMSES). Program graduates are eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic cognitive and psychomotor examination which will make them eligible for certification in Virginia.

Students must be 18 years of age before enrolling in any courses with an EMS prefix, have a current Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (VAOEMS) approved CPR provider/instructor card, be certified through VAOEMS or NREMT at the EMT level for all advanced life support courses. What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses

EMS 100 - CPR for Healthcare Providers or equivalent required prior to enrolling in EMS courses.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Blue Ridge Community College within your first year via College Connect
