SOC250: Criminology

This course focuses on the role and functions of the justice bureaucracy as a means of social control. Evolution of justice system agencies, development of occupational subcultures and a range of factors influencing decision-making throughout the system will be addressed.

  • The student will have an understanding of how crime is defined in contemporary society and how scientific research on crime in the United States is conducted. Target overall student success rate is 70%
  • The student will be able to explain and apply varying theoretical approaches within criminology to the understanding of deviant behavior and crime.
  • The student will define sociological terms and concepts relating to crime including crime typologies","agencies involved with deterring and preventing crime","and the criminal justice system.
  • The student will be able to identify social policies and strategies that have been implemented to address crime in the US and be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of such strategies and social policies. Target overall student success rate is 7
