SOCL220: Global Social Problems
This course addresses social problems in the U.S. and around the broader world. The course devotes considerable attention to inequalities and tensions created by predominant forms of globalization, to critiques by non-Western thinkers, and to experiences of people living within and between Global Northern and Global Southern nations. The course examines historical contexts and contemporary debates, including (but not limited to): unequal international development and global inequality, ethnic conflict, media and culture, food justice, housing insecurity, and educational inequality. In doing so, this course directly engages with the ways such problems are felt on the basis of power, privilege, and marginality, barriers to positive social change, and our moral obligations in responding as responsible global citizens.
