Considerations for Selecting Degree There are scholarship opportunities unique to early childhood certificates and degrees. Students who have a current CDA may be eligible for “credit by able.”
Considerations When Selecting Courses

The Early Childhood Development program at Reynolds has stacking credentials. Students can earn the 16 credit Career Studies Certificate and the 18 credit Advanced Career Studies Certificate. The two combine to create the 34 credit Certificate. At that point, students are only 31 credits away from the Applied Associates Degree in Early Childhood Development.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and J Sargeant Reynolds Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree JMU, GMU, VCU, Longwood, Radford and a few other universities offer students with the A.A.S. in Early Childhood Development the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree and possibly a Pre K-Grade 3 teaching license. Students who do not wish to go on to a 4 year school will still be qualified for many employment opportunities in the early childhood field, including but not limited to preschool teacher, directors and assistant directors at child development centers, before and after school programs, play room attendants, camp directors, instructional aids and family day home programs.
